Body-Painted Weirdos

So, I recently watched Veronica on Netflix, the supposed movie “so scary, people can’t make it through more than halfway.” While I still enjoyed the film and it’s retro vibe, I found myself disappointed in the lack of things that were generally scary enough to motivate me or anyone else to want to turn the movie off. Now, I am a considerable horror fan (I avoid the word “buff” because it often invites the gatekeepers) and have watched tons upon tons of horror films, so it’s definitely possible I am just jaded by all the scares I’ve endured. However, I’ve noticed a trend in horror films that is generally bothering me and just sucks the horror out entirely.

A Conversation

I just want to go ahead and share this from my sister-in-law’s Facebook:

My son: “Why are they crying Mommy?”

Me (holding back tears): “Because a bad man with a gun came to their school and hurt a bunch of people”

“Did they get the bad man?”

“yes baby they did. Ben do you know what to do if a bad man comes to your school?”

“We hide in Mrs F’s bathroom and be quiet”

“And I bet she locks the door, right?”

“Yes”

“And you wait quietly until Mrs F says it’s ok to come out right?”

“Yes”

“Do you practice that at school? Like you practice when the fire trucks come?”

“We do!”

“Good, always listen to your teacher baby, she’s there to keep you safe”

He’s in Preschool. This is the world we live in now. In all my years in school we never practiced what to do in case of an active shooter, it wasn’t a problem then. My son is four years old and I have to have this discussion with him, because it is a very real possibility today. Fire drills, tornado drills, active shooter drills. That is the world we live in now. How sad is that?

If we can’t discuss gun control in America because “guns are part of the American culture” then maybe we need to have a discussion about why that is. If we can’t discuss gun control because “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” then we need to discuss why that is. If we can’t discuss gun control because “it won’t solve the problem” we need to discuss why that is. We need to have an honest discussion about why this is the 18th mass shooting THIS YEAR! It’s only February.

How many more have to happen before Americans stand up and say “Enough is enough.”

How many more parents will loose their children to gun violence before we start to realize that maybe the freedom to own guns isn’t on the same level as the right live without fear of being gunned down.

You have to have a license and in many states a class before you even drive a vehicle. Why is it that at 18 years old you can just go get a gun? Doesn’t that seem strange? You’re not old enough to buy beer yet but as long as you pass the background check, you can buy an AR-15? How does that even make sense?

“But he was mentally disturbed!”
“Criminals don’t follow the law!”
“The 2nd amendment!!!”
“It was his parent’s gun!”
“He got it illegally!”
“It’s not time to be political”
“It’s about mental health!”

I know the answer is complicated. I know that gun control won’t solve everything. I know that there is more to discuss, but you know what? It’s time to be real. It’s time for people to admit that there is a fundamental problem in this country when it comes to our obsession with guns. We as a people have created this problem and we as a people have to figure out how to solve it.

I don’t know what the answer is but I’m praying to God we figure it out soon before another child sits in fear, huddled in their classroom. Before gunshots ring out not in a war zone but in a lunchroom. Before children have their innocence stolen from them by witnessing bloodshed first hand.

This is America, Land of The Free, but living in terror isn’t really freeing is it?

May All Standards Be Forgot

Well, here it comes. No matter how many times we defeat it, the year just pops back up in a new form with a different attack pattern that we have to learn on the fly. Multiple life bars are a pain, man.

Happy New Year, one and all! With 2018 coming around, I thought I’d do something I haven’t done in 3 years. So, let’s talk resolutions!

Aren’t resolutions a pain? Like, we’re being constantly told by people that we shouldn’t have them. That we should just live the year and not try to rigorously adhere to some promise we made ourselves before we knew what the world would be like after a tiny-handed narcissist Katamari’d his plump orange body all over it. SO glad I didn’t give up drunken political rants that my friends are TOTALLY into and enjoy hearing.

That Time of Year

November is in full swing, and you know what that means: Time to endlessly hear about the war on Christmas!

Now, I’m not claiming I have any sort of end-all-be-all argument for this concept. Do I believe there is a war on Christmas? No. Do I find it humorous that people choose to be angry during a time of year that their religious leaders and historical figures promote Peace and Love and Joy? Yes.

Boogie Nights

Halloween is approaching, so how about we get all lit-major on Nightmare Before Christmas?

Why not, right?

So, the other day I literally woke up thinking about the main “antagonist” in that movie, Oogie Boogie. For the longest time it’s bothered me that this character was not more developed. He isn’t even MENTIONED until Act II of the film, and after that point we continue to know very little about him except that he “eats” bugs, he’s been locked away for some reason, and Jack DESPISES him. However, we’re never given an inkling as to why he is so hated by Halloweentown, enough so that the very sight of his “boys” gives the Mayor anxiety. I feel like there was a lot to be done with that character, but in the end it kind of just feels like a cheap attempt to allow Jack (who very well should be the bad guy of this story) to have a moment of redemption by saving Santa from the very predicament his hubris landed Santa in. It’s always just felt like a tacked on character because some Disney Exec was all “hey, there needs to be a villain so we can sell toys.”

An Experiment in Gaming

I tried a weird experiment this past weekend. On Friday, I assaulted 6 of my friends with a random, cryptic series of gifs and then asked them to pick characters, namely teachers at a school somewhere in Michigan. I had them choose strengths and weaknesses, had them describe their relationships to other characters and had them come up with a fear for their character. This all built into the culmination of the experiment on Saturday, which I’ve dubbed “Golden Hills” after the name of the school they work at.

In Hard Times…

Adult Swim stars meditation samurai jack meditate GIF

I sit, close my eyes, and breathe deep.

I take in air and feel the swirl of pressure inside my lungs. For a moment, I am connected to the world outside, physically taking a piece with me, drawing it in and blending with it, my body taking from it what it needs before sending it on its way.

I sit and I breathe.

I feel what I can, focus only on the natural rhythms of my pulse and breath and micro-tremors in muscles. I think about little, letting reflexive thoughts like an itch here or an uncomfortable limb there exist in a negative space of my mind. Continue reading

Also, it has Candy Crush…

I don’t understand people who shame others for using their smart phones excessively. Like, I get parts of it. It’s rude to have your face glued to your phone, constantly texting people while at work or socializing with others. I personally get annoyed with people when I’m hanging out and they’re just tap tapping away texts to someone else, especially when that crap happens while we’re trying to play an RPG or board game [I actually put a rule into play for game nights called the “attentive rule” wherein if you are texting, snoozing, browsing the web, or other forms of being pre-occupied, you will be asked to leave, because friendships like rules, right (file under: none of my friends like me)]. However, the above issues apply to more than just texting. Talking/watching TV/simply looking away while someone is talking is as rude as texting. Excessively doing anything that isn’t work while at work is as irresponsible as being on reddit the whole day.
