Guest Post: A Day Without Us

So, I wish she had let me see this on Wednesday, but I need to post this thing that was written by my wife, Tee. I feel like it very adequately wraps up the counterpoint to many of the arguments that fly through social media whenever there is some sort of protest/awareness day, whether it be facebook profile pics or taking the day off work. Enjoy.

I have to write it down because it’s making me absolutely crazy, and maybe this will calm my spirits.
A lot of folks don’t know the context, or assume it’s all a stunt for publicity or marketing or whatever. But it’s actually a display in solidarity. Let me explain.

Roll Call: Always the GM, Never the PC

Let me open by saying I think absolutely everybody should try their hand at GMing an RPG. Find one you like and that you have preferably played before and give it a go. Whether you are doing a pre-written campaign or a fresh bit of homebrew, it is an exquisite, rewarding experience that challenges you creatively.  Continue reading

Reviewed

Sometimes I have people say to me:

“Hey, you watch a lot of movies and read a bunch and stuff. Maybe you should use that blog thing to do some reviews.”

Well, imaginary person, I just don’t know if that’s something I can do.

I actually have a serious problem with many, if not most reviews. I think the main problem is that there exists this idea among people who choose to review things that having a negative opinion somehow makes your opinion smarter. There is a hoard of nearly mindless contrary zombies groaning out whatever sound-bite they’ve decided to latch in on regarding a particular film, and though that is the only real negative aspect they might be able to focus on, they do so with fervor and completely negate any good that may be remaining in the film.  Continue reading

Alternative Facts

Been a busy two weeks for me. My cat, Weebles, was hospitalized for most of the past two weeks. Been dealing with that and work and various projects. Just generally busy.

And apparently I’m not the only one.

President Trump spent his first few office days doing the political equivalent of releasing a raunchy fart on a crowded school bus and the world has been understandably abuzz.

I think what shocks me the most as I browse various social outlets are the gobs of individuals from both sides that believe just flat out falsehoods about this presidency. They take to Facebook or Twitter and try to convince others of these things, omitting or refusing to accept just how wrong their stance is.

Let’s clear up some of these myths, huh?

Image result for twilight zone the shelter gif

I started my new year in the best way possible.

First, I got to see my favorite episode of Twilight Zone. It’s called “the Shelter.” If you haven’t seen it, find it. Watch it.

To summarize without giving too much away, a group of neighbors celebrate a birthday when the festivities are interrupted by an announcement that nuclear missiles may be on their way. Turns out, only one of the members of this group of friends built a shelter for his family, not large enough for more than three people. As his neighbors beg to be included in the shelter, we bear witness to multiple different reactions to panic.

It ends with an amazing quote: Continue reading

The Jokes Weren’t Worth It

What words are there?

I have typed and erased this probably one hundred plus times (and I’m still not happy with the result). I’m trying like so many of you to decide how to make sense of what happened last night. Trying to decide what is the right way to respond, and I honestly don’t think there is one good option among all the rhetoric floating around.

A few months ago I talked about Fear, about letting it win and control us, and now it has reached a very real pinnacle.

A man riding atop a crimson wave of hatred and fear has been elected into one of the most powerful positions in the world. Continue reading

Should I Stay or Should I Go

Let’s talk about leisure time.

When it comes to time away from work or obligations, there are two camps of people. There are those that choose to be active (day trips, nightlife, sports and other outdoor things, etc.) and those that choose to remain inactive (reading, watching movies, playing board games, etc.). Now, for some reason the people of these two camps have decided that the opposite is inherently wrong and that they should be shamed. I’ve seen this happen on Facebook, in blog posts, in just normal conversation. It’s odd to me since we’re just talking about leisure or things you do in your spare time to unwind. And yet active people call inactive folks lazy or boring while the inactive think an overabundance of activity is frivolous or costly. It’s all nonsense. Continue reading

Creative Indulgence

I admit, I’ve always been a bit of the brooding artist type.

I honestly detest talking to other writers about writing. The mere thought of engaging in some sort of “community” of like minded creatives is cause for eye rolls and gruff sighs from yours truly.

I despise everything I’ve ever created and am easily my biggest critic. Though, less of a critic and more of an ever-persistent internet troll.

One of the biggest hurdles I’ve had to overcome was the idea that being a writer meant I could only write. Time spent watching movies, listening to music, playing video games, socializing, was time I was losing getting to where I want to be. It was a tough hurdle and one that was not easily broken until inspiration came from the most unlikely place. Continue reading
